My interface just decided to stop working after an update one day and turns out to be driver issues between my interface(focusrite saffire ls56) and windows (which I still have yet to get fully sorted out, and it's been about 3 years). I personally swapped from being pretty much exclusively a Windows user to macOS about 3 years ago solely for music production purposes. I have personally still not made the jump from intel yet, I am monitoring the situation and might do the switch in a year or two. The clear downside is that right now the apple ecosystem is transitioning from intel to arm and that hasn't landed fully yet even though a lot of companies have releases Apple ARM native versions of their software by now. Those are the things I could come up with directly, there could be some more that I don't remember right now. I tried using my PC workstation for Live in Windows a couple years ago because it is like 4x as powerful that my current iMac but the lack of this specific feature made me turn back to the mac. You can have whatever editors for synths and midi controllers open without disabling the midi device in the DAWs.
I know there is a new MIDI API in windows that allows for this but many programs still use the old APIs even after many years (maybe over a decade) of the new ones so that new feature is often only theoretical.
Multiple programs can share a single MIDI device at once. You can build virtual sound interfaces from multiple interfaces which is good because most programs only supports using a single audio interface at once. No special drivers (ASIO etc), the built in core audio works well for all kinds of applications.
Ipads have a lot of music software and can be fun to easily connect directly into a DAW. If you have an ipad and you connect it with an usb cable it pops up as an audio and midi device in macos. Music production is one of the few use cases where mac's and macos actually has some advantages:
